Alfa vs BMW vs Merc

Can you guys give me your general opinion on the relative costs for
restoring these three brands.

For some reason I am starting a collection of cars and bikes from 1984
(probably the first time I could afford to buy a real car and get out of my
1964 humber vogue).

All things being equal (which I realise they are not), I’m guessing the
alfa’s are going to be a lot more expensive to restore (at this stage please
don;t get into the relative merits of each brand – I already know the alfa
has the most character).

Thanks

156 2.4 JTD

Looking at one of the above, around 01/02 plate. I have previously driven Golf 1.9 TDi (130s). Can you give me some opinions on these, maybe comparisons? I would have bought an Alfa a while back – but there is always the reliability issue/reputation with these…..or is that unfounded?!

Changes to 147 JTD engine?

Just had a letter from my friendly Alfa dealer to say that, far from
being ready for collection, as expected, my new 147 JTD isn’t even
built yet.  This is because "there has been a change in engine
specification" and they were unable to build my car with the engine
which was current when I placed my order.

Anyone got any information on this?  What’s going on?

Desria vs Veloces

Hi,

I recently bought a secondhand 156 V6, for a cheap price with very
little service history !!! It was such a nice car to drive I felt that
I just had to buy it. I would however like to get it serviced in the
London area and although Desira was recommended to me by a former car
dealer, Veloces seem quite impressive as well. Does anyone have any
experience of either of these outfits or recommend someone else I could
go to ?

Cheers
David

F-1 Calendars & More…..

Just thought I would let people know that if they are looking for a great
Formula One calendar they should go to:

            www.conceptsi.com

The calendar has a spectacular 17.7" x 21.5" format and the quality and
contents of the photos is excellent.  The photo of Alsonso and Michael
is super, as are the photos of the Ferraris at speed.

Plus, they offer the following books and DVDs:

        Autocourse 2005 – 2006
        50 Years of Formula 1 On-Board  -  DVD
50 Years of Ferrari                        -  DVD
The Enzo Ferrari Story                  -  DVD

        Ferrari Cavillino Rampante
        Formula 1 2004 – 2005 Technical Analysis
Grand Prix Century:  First 100 Years of the
Worlds Most Dangerous and Glamorous Sport
Valention Rossi:  Portrait of a MotoGenius
        and more…………………………………………………

They also have some interesting racing Christmas cards, a World’s Greatest
Race Tracks poster, Road Racing Sound Show cassette and several sports
car and racing oriented books.

Does anyone have…..

an older generation Alfa remote alarm key?

I’m looking for one of the big red keys with the black rubber button on
it. Having done some research, it appears these will work with my Marea
– and I have a broken Marea key.

As I recall, late model 155, 164, 145 and 146 keys will do the job, with
a possibility that early pre-switchblade 156 keys also working.

Cheers,

156 Aircon Compressor Mode

On the single zone A/C in a 156, I seem to remember that you can
change what happens when you press the button that
activates/deactivates the compressor. IIRC, in one mode, the
‘compressor switch’ remembers it’s setting when the ignition is turned
off and in the other, it turns the compressor on every time the
ignition is turned on regardless of the previous setting. I think
there are other differences too.

IIRC, someone here provided details of how to switch from one mode to
the other. As my searching revealed nothing, anyone remember/know how
to do it?
