Hi,
I’m new to this newsgroup (but not to the ‘net). I’m looking through the
posts and don’t see many (at least now) dealing with older Alfas. Is this an
appropriate place to seek advice? Is there an FAQ?
Tomorrow I’m going to look at a ’59 Giulietta Spider. Original owner, has
always been garaged, has not been driven since about 1974. Since that time it’s
been in the garage with a tarp over it.
Here’s what I’m *assuming* at this point:
–that I’ll probably have to replace any and all rubber parts
–that I’ll probably have to rebuild the engine (I know enough not to try to
start it as-is.)
–that any gasoline left in it has gelled, and any oil and grease has probably
thickened and/or solidified
I’ve wanted an Alfa for many years and this is my first opportunity. Any advice
as to what to look at? I do have the Alfa Owner’s Bible and the Alfa Buyer’s
Guide to help me. I’m not afraid of mechanical work, but I’ve never done body
work.
BTW, the owner can’t currently find the keys! So I probably won’t be able to
see inside the trunk tomorrow, and if I buy this car I’ll likely be calling a
locksmith to help me out. I also realize that ’59 is a transition year and I
may be looking at a 750, a 101 or some blend of the two.
(And now for the dumb question: How do I open the hood (or bonnet, depending
on where you live)? I don’t want to spend a half hour searching for how that’s
done!)
Any other advice *gratefully* accepted. If I buy this car I’m sure I’ll be
asking a lot more questions. Thanks!
